Testing with browsers via Sandboxie (or other virtual machine) in Windows 10 Home
Hi folks! First time submitting to thread so I hope I've understood rules. I'm gonna be checking in on this pretty regularly over next day or so so fingers crossed for help. I'll vigilantly respond to follow up that leads me toward a solution. :)
Details of note:
- I'm QA testing a WebGL video game and need to do so in multiple browsers, versions of browsers, and swap between them often.
- I am working from my home computer as, you know, COVID-19.
- I am a Windows 10 Home user. I do not have other versions of Windows and I do not want to pirate one.
- I have extensively tried using services like CrossbrowserTesting, and Browserstack. They slow the play FAR too much to make testing worthwhile and just doesn't meet my needs. I'm not looking to simulate remotely anymore.
- I need to test beta builds of popular browsers, like Chrome for example, and not just their current, release versions.
- My work computer has a TON of things I've plugged into my browsers to get them working JUST the way I want so I do not want to uninstall/update/modify them in any way (outside of the normal browser updates, I mean)
- I researched Virtual Machines and found the two most commonly suggested are Windows Sandbox (which apparently doesn't run on Windows Home), and Sandboxie.
- Installed Sandboxie.
- Downloaded Chrome beta, but it won't install inside Sandboxie, I get an "Unable to Connect to the Internet. If you use a firewall, please whitelist GoogleUpdates.exe" error message when I try to install and run it inside Sandboxie.
Anyone know a way forward here? Maybe insight to how to get it to install Chrome Beta? A better sandbox, maybe a way to get Windows Sandbox to (legitimately) work with Windows 10 Home?
Any other developers/testers do this a bunch and have found something that works, without sacrificing security?
Thanks in advance.
