best art advice you've ever been told?

As a beginner artist, it's hard to know what to do. But as an intermediate artist... you don't make beginners mistakes anymore, so vague advice like "study from real life" and "practice uwu" isn't helpful, because you're often already doing it. This is a thread for the best art advice you've ever recieved (and PLEASE mention who it's from, like from a teacher or professor or article or youtube video, in case people want to find the source.) The best pieces of art advice I've ever heard:
  • Advice #1 - Art is all about showing the difference between light and dark. (said by my art teacher) (this is THE BEST advice I've ever been given).
    • Explanation: In the most basic sense - imagine looking at a MS word document, where the background is white and the text is yellow. It's horribly unreadable. In the art world, if you use a light yellow for an outline on a white background (no coloring/shading), it's also pretty unviewable. That's why a lot of artists sketch in dark gray or black: because it easily shows the difference between light and dark. Color still has a value. This is the basic concept, but in terms of shading and color:
    • In a more specific sense - what is the bare minimum you need to make something look 3D? Usually, people want to create the illusion of a 3D object with their art - you draw a 'human' on a 2D piece of paper even though humans are 3D objects. You're creating an illusion. But how?
      • Imagine a photograph of a tree. Now, imagine that the image is in black and white (and gray). Can you look at the image and tell that it's a tree? Can you tell that it's a 3D object? Yes, you can. Our eyes are much more sensitive to light/dark than they are to color (due to the structure of rods/cones in our eyes.)
      • Now, imagine that same photograph. Imagine that instead becoming black and white, it becomes hue-only - meaning that the green of the leaves becomes neon green, the brown of the trunk becomes orange (brown is dark orange). There is no difference in brightness, only difference in hue (color.) It would pretty much look like a neon green blob with a curvy neon orange rectangle. Could you tell that it was a real object? Could you tell that it's supposed to be 3D? No. Because we interpret the depth of an object based on values of light and dark, not color. This is why colorblind people can function in society without even knowing they can't see colors.
    • How does this affect my art? Always make sure you're showing a range of values (value means how light or dark a color is.) If you're drawing a light object, make the background dark. For example, if you're drawing a yellow sphere still life, make the background a dark blue. This will make the spheres pop into view. Colors innately have value - some look brighter than others even at the same intensity. (Relative luminosity.) Another example: if your character has pale skin and eyes and wears all white, put them in darker backgrounds, and consider adding dark or midtone accents to their design. Another note: midtones! If your piece is only made of midtones, it will look bland and dull. Maybe you're in a dark environment, like the batcave. (note: i have never seen batman im just assuming he has an edgy lair). Maybe you don't want really bright colors - that's understandable. So add midtones, like a red or green. Instead of white/yellow lighting, maybe make it pink. !!!If your whole piece is dark, even midtones will add contrast and create the illusion of brighter areas! Heck, if you use midtones with low blending as your highlights in a dark setting, IT WILL LOOK BETTER than if you used very bright colors because it will look more realistic and true to the lighting!!!
    • How to check if you're doing this correctly: (in sai 1/2 or other art software): you can change your whole piece to black and white by using a layer mode. Create a new layer on top of your piece. use the paint bucket to fill it white white/black/gray - it doesnt matter which. Then set the layer mode to "color" and your piece will be in black and white. (and then hide or reveal the layer to cancel/create the effect again.) If your colors are too close in value, add more contrast. Bonus: saturation can affect value. If you need to make a color lightedarker for contrast/value range, desaturate it slightly to make it lighter, or vice versa.
  • Advice #2 - you get too used to your own work. to find errors, flip the canvas horizontally. (from artist ikimaru and various websites)
    • sometimes we don't notice mistakes in our work until we either: stand far back or change the view. to flip the view, go to canvas > flip canvas horizontally. (this only changes your view, the piece will still be in the original direction, and will save as such.) If something doesn't look right, flip it. Work in that view. Flip it again. A solid piece can be viewed from either direction and it will still make sense. Try it on a professional artist's work if you don't believe me.
  • Advice #3 - don't rely on gimmicks. (art teacher)
    • you know those artists who hide their bad anatomy/lining/composition with detailed filters? that's a gimmick. hiding the problem will just mean you'll keep making the same mistakes. another, more positive gimmick is color. do you need color to make art? no. it just helps make art look better, in many scenarios. so, having trouble with shading? try only using black and white for a few pieces. go back to the basics. sometimes, color isn't the issue, but technique. learn the techniques, then go to color, because shading with color is more than just changing the value - hue plays a big part as well.
  • Advice #4 - " Meaning, real art takes courage, okay? And honesty." (the office, s3 e16)
    • sometimes, the reason why your art isn't getting better... is because you're afraid. art isn't all technique. it's also rooted in deep knowledge of color and light physics and form/shape and anatomy. but its very hard to learn these on your own. because you have to learn the facts and then practice and practice and fail. so bite the bullet. (eat the paint?). do you have a big idea? do it. let it be messy. is your art looking bad? study color theory through books and online resources. stop playing it safe. stop getting complacent; admire and appreciate your progress but never reject a chance for improvement. “There’s no guarantee that the weapon that worked first will continue working until the end. I have to keep moving forward. I have to keep going! My greatest weapon is not getting caught!” – Shoyo Hinata, Haikyuu.
    • suffer for your art shouldn't mean "break your wrists and strain your back and go through a time crunch." it means "do the work to improve; start a piece knowing youll fail but still put in your whole effort anyway, spend hours researching color theory and taking notes and teaching yourself the basics when no one else will, abandon a piece youve been obsessing over because you know its the best you can do, even though its not perfect or up to the standards of professionals when youve only been drawing a year, it means calling a piece 'done' even though its better in your head, it means accepting failure and holding your head high as you start your next failure too, never giving up, never being satisfied with the talent you have. art takes courage.
And that's what i have! some of it's technical, some of it's not. maybe it didn't help you at all, but maybe someone out there will find this who needs it.
