The State of the New York Jets Organization
I just want to take some time to clear up what I view as misconceptions about the New York Jets organization.
As things currently stand it is pathetic, indefensible, and downright embarrassing. But I take issue with the idea that the Jets are an incompetent organization from the top down that should be avoided at all costs by any QB and are incapable of succeeding. Let me explain a brief history of the current ownership and how we ended up in this situation.
Woody Johnson purchased the Jets in 2000. What followed was a respectable decade of football. Throughout the early and mid 2000s the Jets managed to compile a winning record, including multiple playoff appearances and playoff wins. They only managed to win the division once, but they were competing with the greatest dynasty in NFL history.
Following this mild success they hired Rex Ryan and drafted Mark Sanchez 5th overall in 2009. The team was immediately competitive, reaching the AFC championship in their first season. Sanchez played like a rookie, but was given more than enough support as he went into his 2nd season as he had one of the best O lines in the league, formidable skill position players, and a great defense.
In Ryan’s 2nd year the Jets raced to a 9-2 start, but failed to take the division from the Patriots. But that season they would ultimately overcome their greatest obstacle, as the beat they Patriots in Foxborough to advance to a 2nd straight AFC championship.
Despite being unable to get over the hump, the Jets were truly in contention for a Super Bowl both years, and put their franchise quarterback and a fine situation to succeed. The fact of the matter is Sanchez simply was not a good player. He didn’t develop on his own and was unable to take advantage of the situation. If he had played like a top 5 pick in his second year, it’s very possible the Jets would have won the Super Bowl.
What followed those playoff runs was a series of failures as it became clear Ryan was not a great coach. Despite this, he was able to stick around a bit too long on the good will of his early success. Unfortunately Ryan’s boisterous personality only drew more attention to his failures and created the perception of a clown show.
So in 2015 they responded by hiring a coach who temperament wise can be considered the polar opposite of Ryan. Todd Bowles was stoic, showing little emotion on the sidelines and giving little to the press. But he immediately restored some hope. He led the Jets to a 10-5 record to start the season and put them in position to make the playoffs. Keep in mind this was in 2015, a successful season right in the middle of the Jets current playoff drought.
Unfortunately Ryan Fitzpatrick choked the final game of the season, the Jets missed the playoffs and the Bowles tenure began to unravel. Similarly to Ryan he probably stuck around too long due to his early success.
But even worse than the Bowles tenure was the man who was hired to be the GM of the team in 2015. This is the first of the two ultimate mistakes the Jets made. Mike magangganc is the man most responsible for the incompetency you see today, even more than Adam Gase. Mike magannac had absolutely no ability to construct a team, set us back years, and drafted Darnold into this awful situation. They then compounded this error by hiring Adam Gase. Inexcusable and deserving of ridicule.
I understand these were two franchise altering, colossal miscalculations. But macgaggan is already gone, and Gase will be soon. So the point of my write up is to prove that this organization as it stands has the ability to be competent. We just need to do the difficult job of undoing mac’s fuck ups and get rid of Gase. Unfortunately Darnold was caught in the crossfire, but under a new regime it is possible for a QB to succeed with the Jets. People saying Lawerence should avoid the Jets at all costs are simply misguided.
TLDR: The assertion that the Jets are an incompetent organization from top to bottom is unfounded, they have been successful under current ownership, the current situation is the result of an awful GM who has been fired and Gase who will be fired soon
