[AAR] The Exodus from Terra (Part 2)

Part 2: The Dauntless Equilibrium
[Part 1]
Off-the-record Comments: This update has taken longer than I had planned for a couple of reasons. Work crunch-time came to write and present conference research papers. I also moved apartments which took quite a while. But most importantly to the story...I've drawn pictures! Some of you may have seen my recent watercolor pictures, and they are going to be integral storytelling elements going forward.
In the future, I want to be able to update this every two weeks, so we'll see how I do. If you want to get previews of the images that I'm creating, feel free to follow me on instagram: @vulcant55.
January 1st, 2055: John Dodd finishes the initial stage of the spacecraft research program. The Earth’s subject matter experts of conventional rocketry come together under Dodd’s lead to research the 5 EP, 2500 ton Carnot conventional engine. While massive and slower than the promising new Trans Newtonian developments, it will carry mankind into the void once again.
January 26th, 2056: Dodd completes a suite of critical life support systems: emergency, small and normal-sized cryogenic storage berths. The fluid pump and fanout designs become standardized for future implementation in exodus vessels.
Alex Sanderson completes research into the production of terraforming gas packets with a 0.0015 atm fundamental capacity. The design of the gas packets relies on careful design of a sturdy box. A preliminary design is shown here. The packet will be filled with the designed gas mixture and launched from a future terraforming module via low-velocity railgun action. The box shape ensures maximum drag upon re-entry which guarantees disintegration in the atmosphere. The packet is designed to withstand the large pressure gradient between the gas inside the box and the vacuum of space outside. Certain designed failure points in the wallsof the box are temperature triggered to create gas vents during re-entry. This prevents the uncontrolled expansion of the gas payload and subsequent explosion.
Sanderson is tasked to work with Secretary General (SG) Callum Steven’s staff to improve the slow construction rates. In parallel with this effort, Sophie Baxter, a sensors and radar expert, has been tasked with converting conventional ground penetrating radar technology to use TN elements. Uridium ceramics were proposed in her grant proposal as prime candidates for updating the radar tech for geological survey purposes. Completion of the initial technology study is due by August of this year.
Finally, construction of a commercial shipyard is given highest priority for Terran industry. Set for Low Earth Orbit (LEO), this shipyard is the most tenable foothold in space to construct ships to evacuate the citizens of Earth.
September 1st, 2056: The geological survey radar modules have been designed by Sophie Baxter’s team. With the final component in place, the design of the first Trans Newtonian spacecraft begins. The Argonaut geological survey vessel has been proposed with the following spec summary:
Argonaut class Geological Survey Vessel 4 500 tons 75 Crew 499.2 BP TCS 90 TH 5 EM 0 55 km/s Armour 1-24 Shields 0-0 Sensors 1/1/0/4 Damage Control Rating 1 PPV 0 MSP 69 Max Repair 100 MSP Intended Deployment Time: 12 months Spare Berths 1 Cryogenic Berths 200 Carnot 5 EP Commercial Conventional Engine (1) Power 5 Fuel Use 8.84% Signature 5 Exp 5% Fuel Capacity 50 000 Litres Range 22.4 billion km (4713 days at full power) Geological Survey Sensors (4) 4 Survey Points Per Hour This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes
The annotated deck layout of the Argonaut can be found here.
February 11th, 2057: A month ahead of schedule the Hamilton Docks commercial shipyard is completed and tooled to produce the first of its class, the Argonaut. The first ship is due to be built November of 2058.
June 21st, 2058: Alex Sanderson completes the design of the terraforming module. The design summary of the module can be seen here. Plans for the construction of orbital terraforming bases begin to take shape, however, the design of suitable orbital habitats is yet undefined. John Dodd is seconded from his collaboration with SG Callum Stevens to focus his research coordination on the design of a habitat capable of supporting 50,000 lives. Projections slate completion to take roughly one year.
November 21st, 2058: The population of the Earth has grown to 9.1 billion humans1, and still the sun’s heating continues its steady march. The orbital terraforming bases are still a year from design and manufacture, but some among the Conclave doubt it will be a successful stopgap measure.
The doubts were pushed aside with the news that the Argonaut had completed construction. Captain Kate Green was given command of the new vessel in a brief ribbon cutting ceremony. There is much work to do and Captain Green’s crew needs to sail as soon as possible. Green has a long term medical condition that might end her career early, but she is still the most suitable commander for the initial survey missions.
1 910 million humans in reality, just multiplying by 10 for roleplay reasons
June 2nd, 2059: Dodd finishes the design of a 50,000-person, standard orbital habitat. The design of the Dauntless class orbital terraforming base is swiftly drafted in the coming month. The design is given by:
Dauntless class Terraforming Base 642 550 tons 570 Crew 3748.4 BP TCS 12851 TH 0 EM 0 1 km/s Armour 1-663 Shields 0-0 Sensors 1/1/0/0 Damage Control Rating 1 PPV 0 MSP 4 Max Repair 500 MSP Intended Deployment Time: 3 months Spare Berths 2 Habitation Capacity 100 000 Terraformer: 5 module(s) producing 0.0075 atm per annum This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes This design is classed as an Orbital Habitat for construction purposes
The Dauntless class orbital hab features living space for 100,000 people, 570 crew and 5 terraformer modules of Alex Sanderson’s design. The additional living space was design mandated by SG Stevens as an emergency habitation measure in case the solar heating sped up. “Should the need arise, we cannot afford to be caught with our pants down. If we could have saved more, we will never forgive ourselves.” The construction of the Dauntless 001 base commenced with expected completion by April 2060. Each base represents a serious investment of minerals and a total of three bases are expected to be commissioned to control the surface temperature to livable standards.
November 11th, 2059: Construction of heat shelters and thermal expansion resistant infrastructure finished early which in turn allowed the sole focus of the Terran industry to speedily construct the Dauntless 001 terraforming base. Televised and streamed broadcasts of Captain Sean Watson’s transfer of authority ceremony. Hope flickers again among the sweltering heat.
Days later a report from Captain Watson relayed the details of the terraforming operation. Fully functional, the Dauntless 001 is capable of releasing or absorbing 0.0086 atm per annum of a target gas. Production and packet delivery of anti-greenhouse gas mixes began a week later as all systems came online. An aquapict was taken of the one module as it began the first gas packet launches. Though only scheduled to release packets over oceans during orbital operation, coastal communities reported the presence of green meteor showers including the aquapict taken by a resident of Bar Harbor, Maine.
The United Nations issued a statement assuring residents that the green glow seen is a result of the chemical spectra of heated anti-greenhouse gas. Additionally, small meteorites of packet debris have been noted near coastal regions, though the damage of property and injury of persons has been limited so far.
April 22nd, 2060: Alex Sanderson’s medical problem of Parkinson’s disease forces him to retire as lead biological and ecology scientist of the United Nations. He was captured, smiling, on his last day in the lab on this carbonpict. John Dodd steps in with several teams of his own to take over Sanderson’s work, albeit at a slower pace.
May 17th, 2060: The Dauntless 002 terraforming base is completed and command is transferred to Captain Charles “Chuck” Gibson. Combined with Captain Watson’s operation, the two bases are capable of 0.0169 atm per annum of anti-greenhouse (AGH) gas production.
August 7th, 2060: Anti-greenhouse gas makes up 0.71% of the atmosphere, reducing the greenhouse factor (GF) to 1.09 from 1.1. Progress is beginning to show on the surface temperature. A full report on the mechanics of the terraforming gas concentrations and greenhouse factor is underway.
September 2nd, 2060: The Marc Aaronson geological survey vessel is built and crewed by Captain Kate Green, who was previously replaced by Lucas Ford on the Argonaut. Given Ford’s outstanding scores at the academy for survey command and deeply wealthy connection to the Ford Engine Company, fleet command was pressured to relieve Captain Green until the Marc Aaronson was built.
October 2nd, 2060: Dodd finishes Cargo Handling research, thus prompting the design of a common chassis for both a Colony Ark and a Freighter vessel. Before they can be built, however, a relief from the tepid pace of conventional engines was deemed necessary. Again, lacking true specialists in Trans Newtonian power and propulsion, John Dodd takes lead to design a pressurized water reactor. Weeks earlier, Dodd was awarded the Terran Scientific Achievement medal at a banquet in Beijing. His widely felt research contributions and discovery of Trans Newtonian elements garner him the highest honor a scientist can achieve.
November 7th, 2060: The final orbital terraforming base commissioned is built. The Dauntless 003 is captained by Commander Morgan Ingram. The annual production increases to 0.0251 atm.
February 27th, 2061: In anticipation for a growing need to load cargo and colonists in the future, a space port is built in low earth orbit within proximity of the Hamilton Docks. By current estimates, the infrastructure provided by way of freight hauler arms and passenger shuttles to the surface should cut loading times in half. Terran industry turns their focus back to the surface to produce 1000 more heat shelter infrastructure units for the population affected near the boiling equatorial zones. Automated mine depots are also commissioned by the United Nations Mineral Congress for future mining operations. Until they are deployed beyond Earth, they are put to the test at key mineral sites on the surface.
On the scientific front, Dodd’s team completes the design for a pressurized water reactor and immediately begins work on a nuclear thermal engine. Completion is slated for October.
December 2nd, 2061: Dodd’s team finishes a suite of research into scalable nuclear thermal engines as well as a collaboration with Ford Engine Company to produce a 750 and 2500 ton nuclear engine. Though manufactured by Ford, this series of engines are named after Dodd in honor of his recent achievements.
The Ford Engine Company opens a naval shipyard in anticipation of future military requests. In the meantime, the United Nations commissions the new shipyard to tool up for a modified Argonaut class that will feature Dodd’s engine designs. This also will free up the Hamilton Docks to expand and tool for colony and freight ships. While the Docks expand, a new survey vessel, the G.O. Abell is built and commanded by Captain Ross Hunt. Soon they will be upgraded to the nuclear engine set.
April 15th, 2062: Hamilton Docks finishes expansion and begins retooling for the Orpheus class colony ship and Sisyphus class freighter. The change to the shipyard’s toolset is enormous, however, and completion is expected no earlier than December 2063. The designs of the Orpheus and Sisyphus are given in the following:
The Orpheus
Orpheus class Colony Ship 36 100 tons 235 Crew 1368.95 BP TCS 722 TH 375 EM 0 519 km/s Armour 1-97 Shields 0-0 Sensors 1/1/0/0 Damage Control Rating 1 PPV 0 MSP 24 Max Repair 31.25 MSP Intended Deployment Time: 3 months Spare Berths 0 Cryogenic Berths 100000 Cargo Handling Multiplier 25 Dodd 125 EP Commercial Nuclear Thermal Engine (3) Power 125 Fuel Use 8.84% Signature 125 Exp 5% Fuel Capacity 200 000 Litres Range 11.3 billion km (251 days at full power) This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

No deck layouts were provided as the information is proprietary to Hamilton Heavy Industries, the owners of the commercial shipyard.2
2 Deck layouts also take forever to draw, trace, ink and finally color...I will probably limit a layout to once per story update or every two updates so that it doesnt slow me down.
April 25th, 2063: In the past year, several initiatives have begun to bear fruit. To combat low Duranium stockpiles from the Dauntless orbital bases, mines have been under constant production to refill the reserves and refuel other industry. Research has focused on improving efficiencies across the board: engine fuel consumption, economic growth, shipbuilding education, shipyard training, and research process improvements.
The Earth is at 10 billion souls and though many of them are displaced by climate change, hope has been rekindled with the announcement that Dauntless bases have done their job. The global temperature has been forcibly reduced to 13 degrees Celsius on average. The time series of temperature readings has been updated to reflect the changes in recent years: here.
Only one Dauntless class terraformer will need to stay active. The other two bases will be shut down to idle and most crew returned to training bases on the surface. Until a suitable tug vessel can be manufactured at least. After that, the idle bases will be towed to orbit around Mars to begin a transformation process there that might serve as a halfway home for humanity while the United Nations Science Congress researches methods for interstellar exodus to a stable star system.
The 13 degrees announcement has been a mixed blessing for most. While the heating and cooling took place over a decade, the gradual thermal expansion and comparatively rapid cooling has taken its toll on infrastructure. Roads and bridges have been hastened to an untimely demise, which have in turn caused delays and complications to trade and transport of goods necessary for industry. A cadre of airlines have been operating relatively nonstop over the decade to transport materials as needed. Domestic buildings for companies, business and especially houses have faired poorly near the equator. Millions have been displaced to heat shelters constructed by the United Nations. This includes island nations that had to flee the rising ocean level as ice caps melted. The eastern seaboard of the United States suffered severe flooding as well.
One of the unforeseen effects of the terraforming has played out in the higher concentration of gases in the atmosphere. Besides the sensor re-calibrations continually needed for basic flight instruments and meteorological needs, the increased atmosphere has acidified the oceans. The partial pressure of CO2 is no longer sufficient to evaporate properly from the oceans and the higher concentration of carbonic acid has killed off swathes of sea life. The planet itself has shaken as mighty storm systems emerge from turbulent ocean currents. From his bedside in New York, Alex Sanderson has been consulted on the growing ecological crisis. He has proposed limiting the atmosphere injections to 1.25 atm total to keep damage minimal. Currently the total atmospheric pressure is 1.0763 atm. Only time will tell if this limit is achievable. Millions may die as the world strains under cosmic and man-made pressures.

Manticore U.N. Campaign, Part 7

(I'm travelling, and apologies for the delay on conducting the wargames match, but hopefully soon. For now, I wanted to get something up, though)
Note that this isn't a finely tuned AAR, and some of it is ho-hum updates and numbers I expect people to gloss over. This time we develop a new light tanker, a faster shuttle, have an encounter with a comet, and slowly grow our fleet of cargo and colony ships.

Part 6
June 1, 2044
The Hecate launches, dividing her runs equally between Luna, Mars, and Ganymede for the moment.
June 11,2044
A Nicolas Steno class Geological Survey Shuttle commanded by Lt Commander Kane Hutchinson reaches the comet Ikeya-Zang, intercepting it 14.33 bill KM from Earth, farther away than any other surveyed body.
Pic, Manticore 5
3 Anders class shuttles have made it home to Earth while the other 5 are on their way or will be shortly.
Only 11 more system bodies remain unsurveyed out of 620.
At the end of a long construction queue, political factions gather to make their cases for how to allot the industrial might of the U.N. in the year to come. First, a review of the players involved.
Political faction status:
Oscar Cox Administration
  • Governor Oscar Cox (Prod 35%, Mining 5%, Shipbuilding 5%, Population Growth 10%)
  • Sector Commander Rhys Gardner (Prod 15%, Mining 15%, Population 15%, Shipbuilding 5%)
  • Jessica Higgins Diplomatic Team (rating 215)
The Cox Administration want to strike an equitable balance between the factions, minimize infighting, and invest in expanded capacity in the form of installations, efficiency research, and colonies. They envision a completely colonized Sol system and cite it as humanity’s manifest destiny.
Fleet Command
  • Admiral Catherine Davidson (Fleet Training 175, Ops 15%, Logistics 20%,Fighter ops 10%)
  • Vice Admiral Charlie Hale (Ops 20%, Fleet Training 200)
  • Christopher Blake, Public Affairs, Fleet Command (Diplomacy 25%)
  • Scientist Bradley Shepherd (MK 35%)
  • Politician Isabelle Randall (Mining 5%, Shipbuilding 25%, Pop 15%)
  • Bethany Bird Diplomatic Team (rating 150) (shared with Combine)
Fleet Command controls the powerful and popular Mauler squadrons, Hermes Cargo ships, and the Hecate. Fleet Command wants more research into new weapons technologies or advancements to missile technologies. They’re willing to hold off on a major push for applied technology now, but they want expanded shipyards to position themselves to build a true navy in the future.
Combined Armed Forces
  • General Marcus Sheppard (GF Training 200)
  • Major General Nathan James (GF Training 150)
  • Bethany Bird Diplomatic Team (rating 150) (shared with Fleet Command)
The Combine controls the popular and powerful Garrison Battalions defending Earth. The Combine wants additional ground force training centers but it especially wants increased research into new weapons to train more advanced units of soldiers with TN technologies..
Science Community
  • Scientist Harry Marsden (CP 20%)
  • Scientist Sean Skinner (CP 30%)
  • Scientist Kane Austin (PP 30%)
  • Scientist Lucas Obrien (BG 40%)
  • Scientist Gemma Walsh (LG 25%)
Harry Marsden is still the most popular scientist on Earth, but Sean Skinner has surpassed him in usefulness. In total, the Science community is more powerful than ever. They want more labs and more resources and full utilization of all science leaders and labs at any time.
Capitalist Alliance
  • Politician Bailey Naylor (Mining 15%, Wealth 15%, Espionage 15%), presently serving on an administration intelligence committee.
  • Governor Aidan West (Wealth 25%, Mining 5%, Factory 15%, Shipbuilding 10%)
  • Governor Thomas Morley (Mining 15%, Wealth 10%, Shipbuilding 5%) (Governor of Friedman)
  • Governor Scott O'brien (Mining 20%, Terraforming 15%) (Governor of Reinmuth)
  • Ellis Douglas Diplomatic Team (180)
The Capitalist Alliance wants government investment in private industry, private industry access to TN tech, and government construction of financial centers. They also want to see the construction of automated mines to cut out the uncertainty of organized labor. They have a powerful lobbying group and a number of recent wins.
Workers Guild
  • Governor Isaac Coles (Prod 10%, Mining 30%, Shipbuilding 10%), Governor of Mars
  • Lily Hardy Diplomatic Team (120)
Workers Guild wants to see full employment and they want to see the interests of the Capitalist Alliance held in check by ending corporate subsidies. They also propose a series of TN public works programs including reactors to provide higher quality of life for the people on Earth.
Current lobby team strengths:
  • Jessica Higgins Diplomatic Team (rating 215) Oscar Cox Administration
  • Bethany Bird Diplomatic Team (rating 150) Fleet Command and Combine
  • Ellis Douglas Diplomatic Team (180) Capitalist Alliance
  • Lily Hardy Diplomatic Team (120) Workers Guild
With all this in mind, the Oscar Cox administration advances the following construction queue
Proposed construction queue:
  1. 2,000 Infrastructure
  2. 6 Ground Force Training Centers
  3. 4 Shipyards (2 and 2)
  4. 2 Space elevators (spaceports)
  5. 250 Mines
  6. 250 Construction factories
  7. 5 Deep space tracking facilities
  8. 5 Mass drives
  9. 2 Earth University campuses
  10. 16 Research labs
  11. 100 Financial Centers
The GFTCs are front-loaded to allow for building Army Corps of Engineers units for Callisto. The plan is capacity-heavy, but the room is also full of political interests that will vie for the office of Earth Governor in 2 ½ year. Increased capacity would put them all in a stronger position to do more at the start of the next administration.
The construction queue comes with the caveat that periodic stops for prefabricated parts and colony infrastructure as needed are expected. Also, expansion of existing shipyards, full utilization of labs, full utilization of ground force training facilities, and continued construction of Hermes and Hecate ships is a part of the vote.
Ultimately, all parties agree to the construction plans, this considerable grumbling from both the Capitalist Alliance and Workers Guild, though they’re each a little happy that the other didn’t get as much as they wanted.

August 21, 2044
The first squadron of 8 Mauler-Bs are complete and begin training. Fleet Command issues orders for the 8 top pilots to transfer to the new ships. After the crew training shakeup at the Naval Academy, these crews are already tracking about 7% more effective than their predecessors.
Hermes Cargo ships 8, 9, and 10 are also complete and the next 3 members of the class are laid down.
Venture capitalists create yet another civilian automated mining facility, this one is on Borrelly and is the equivalent of about 30 auto mines.

Credit expenditure by the U.N. is happening faster than income, but by a margin of less than 200 credits per month. Though note that ordinance factories are currently dormant. Note that ground units only account for about 3.4% of the budget, which the Combine is not pleased with. Also note that tax on trade goods, tax on off-world mining, and financial centers are starting to pay dividends.

In short, colonies are exploding, shipyards and slipways are up, there are 8 squadrons of Maulers now, ground force training has doubled, and Earth is on the cusp of a big increase in construction factories and mines.
Fleet Command requests that the newly available shuttle factories lay down another 16 Selene class Light Transports.

The final Anders class Survey ship has returned home - at a painfully slow 400 km/s just as it sped out of Earth orbit in May of 2041 at a blisteringly fast 400 km/s. The two more modern survey shuttles are finishing up the geological survey of Sol.

One of the farthest out concentrations of TN material discovered yet, this one at the comet Hale-Bopp
Hale–Bopp was first discovered on July of 1995 separately by Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp prior to it becoming naked-eye visible on Earth in 1996. It was visible to the naked eye for a record 18 months, twice as long as any comet since. Many senior leaders were alive during its close brush with Earth in the 90s including Captain Hodges who is leading the Nicolas Steno class Geological Survey Shuttle scanning it.
Spectroscopic observations of Hale–Bopp revealed the presence of many organic chemicals, several of which had never been detected in comets before and it had a unique sodium tail. It is not clear that significant Trans-Newtonian deposits were the cause of some of the strange readings.

Notably, a Second Heaven's Gate cult on Earth formed during the approach to the comet and committed mass-suicide as the scans took place, a fact that was kept from the survey crews until their return.
Scientology cults are also using the symbolism of the Hale-Bopp comet to grow their ranks.

The Nicolas Steno class Geological Survey Shuttles are running low on fuel and morale. The latter is difficult to address, but Fleet Command commissions a swift tanker able to catch up to the Stenos and provide fuel support. Two Mosquito-B class Light Tankers are ordered immediately.

Hermes 14-16 launch, then 17-20 are quickly laid down in the newly vacant berths.
There are presently 32 Mauler-As and 32 Mauler-Bs. They spend most of their time on training exercises, but 8 are stationed at Earth, 2 at Mars, 2 at Ganymede, 2 escort the Hecate fleet, 2 escort the Selene fleet, 2 escort the Hermes fleet, and 1 each at the 4 corporate automated mines throughout the system. Most of this rotation also doubles as shore leave for the crews.

Hecate 3 launches while Hecates 4 and 5 are laid down.
15 million people now live off-world from Earth. That rounds up to 1% of the 2.56 billion humans in the system.

Steno 1 completes a survey of the McNaught-Russell comet on the edge of the solar system and begins the 221-day trip back to Earth.

There are 14,710 tons of mined Duranium on Earth - a figure that has waffled between 15,000 and 20,000 over the years and is dipping below 15,000 for the first time in a very long time despite 50% of industry presently being used to build more mines. There are about 2,200 tons of Duranium off-world, purchased from corporate mining colonies and waiting to be transported back to Earth. That’s a good buffer, but it might be wise to find some less Duranium-intensive construction goals for later in the queue. At any rate, the 250 mines being built now will put the U.N. in a stronger place.
Meanwhile Geology teams are running sweeps of planets and asteroids after their orbital scans and the Pollack class Shuttles are no longer sufficient to get them where they want to be swiftly. The Tyson class Shuttle is more than three times as fast and is still very long-range with high endurance. Two are laid down immediately.

Fleet Command also puts in an order for an additional 4 squadrons of Mauler-B class Armed Shuttles, doubling the number of Mauler-Bs. These will eventually allow for better defensive coverage throughout the system with a strong reserve at Earth.

Oscar Cox puts in the effort to address the Duranium shortage by talking to top experts and consulting leading scientists like Harry Marsden who built a lot of the best practices for large-scale deep mining. This understanding and some hands-on leadership has incrementally increased mining output.
(Oscar Cox’s Mining skill just raised from 5% to 10%. That’s helpful)
