I hope this is the right place to ask...
So, I'm looking to do some modifications on my old laptop; It's an Acer Aspire 4741, I got around 10 years ago. I'm wanting to replace the DVD Drive I never use with an SSD (via a caddy), and use this for the OS. And while I'm fiddling around with it, maybe upgrading the RAM, too. I more or less know how to do each of those, so what I wanted to ask was, how should I go about getting an OS onto the SSD? I don't suppose it's as easy as a simple copy/paste, eh? ;)
I've heard about "cloning" HDDs to SSDs, but would it be possible to copy/move JUST Windows, not all my other crap? Or would I be better off just getting and installing a new OS to the SSD, and if so, would it cause any fuckery having 2 OS's? (The old one on my current HDD, plus the SSD one). I'd rather not have to clone the whole HDD if possible since the SSD's much smaller, ut it that's what I HAVE to do, then I suppose it's bearable.
Second, and a bit unrelated to the first, but I also acquired some RAM from another (broken) laptop. It's a single stick of 8GB RAM. I was thinking of replacing my current, "blazingly fast", 2GB RAM with that.
My only concern is, my potential replacement RAM is only a single stick, while my current is 2 slots of 1GB each. The new RAM also says it's 1600Mhz, 1.35V, while my current RAM is 1066Mhz, 1.5V, I believe. Both are DDR3 though, but my concern with just trying it anyway is I don't want to fry anything on my laptop if it isn't compatible. Any opinions or advice here, or am I better off not using this RAM? And if I do TRY the RAM, and it is in any way incompatible, what risks are involved? Will it fry the motherboard as I fear, or just fail to start properly until I put the right RAM back in?
I know some might say it's just better to get a new laptop with how long I've had this one, but the thing is (Touch wood) nothing's actually wrong with it, everything still works perfectly as I need it to. This is basically just a "cause I can" kind of upgrade, not really a "cause I need to". And the amount I'm spending is far less than a new laptop would cost, anyway ;)
